Diocletian's Palace

Diocletian was a Roman Emperor (ca. 300 A.D.) who built his summer digs here in Split, Croatia. I think he also retired here, probably with one of those ridiculously large government pensions. The palace is the most important historical site in Croatia and the centerpiece of the old town, which has become the main tourist area.  As luck would have it,  I'm staying in a luxury apartment in a 1,700 year-old building within the palace walls. There were repairs needed in the tiny studio where I was supposed to stay, so the host sent me to her cousin's place instead. It has million dollar views of the ocean and the "Riva," which is the famous waterfront pedestrian area. These photos were taken from my patio.
