I'm on my way to France by train and made a stopover in Genoa. I expected the streets to be lined with salami, but no such luck. Genoa is the birthplace of the great Italian explorer Christopher Columbus. Leif Ericson actually discovered America several hundred years before Columbus, but come on now, he wasn't Italian!
